Ordinary subtitles assume the audience can hear. They render spoken dialogue, often translated, and stop there. SDH assumes the opposite. The distinction matters on modern platforms. Traditional closed captions (the Line 21 / CEA-608 style long required by the FCC for U.S. broadcast) do not travel cleanly over HDMI or many streaming pipelines. SDH packages the same essential information—dialogue plus non-speech cues—into subtitle file formats such as SRT or VTT that every major streaming service and player can handle. Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video and others treat SDH tracks as the practical accessibility standard for on-demand content. Character limits differ too: closed captions historically top out around 32 characters per row; SDH commonly allows up to 42, giving room for clearer rendering of names, effects, and music notes without forced abbreviation.

WHO figures put the scale in perspective. Roughly 1.5 billion people live with some degree of hearing loss; about 430 million have disabling hearing loss that requires rehabilitation. Those numbers are projected to rise. Accessibility is not a niche compliance checkbox. It is a sizable and growing share of the potential audience. Surveys reinforce the broader habit: large percentages of hearing viewers, especially younger ones, keep subtitles on most of the time for clarity, accents, noisy environments, or multitasking. Text must match the audio order and intent, appear and clear with the corresponding speech or sound at a readable pace, run for the full program, and avoid covering faces or essential graphics.

YouTube localization adds its own practical layer. Auto-generated captions remain a starting point only; they frequently miss names, misspell terms, and ignore non-speech information. A clean workflow begins with a carefully timed source-language track (SRT is still the most portable workhorse; VTT adds styling and positioning options useful for accessibility menus). Human review then handles translation, compression for reading speed (roughly 15–20 characters per second is a common comfort range), speaker IDs, and sound cues.
